161. Edward Stanford / (Birds of Devon) 1885

In 1885 Stanford's Parliamentary County Atlas appeared with maps that were originally transfers from Stanford's Library Map of England and Wales. Although most county maps for the Parliamentary County Atlas are on one page, Devon is on two sheets. The map is overprinted in yellow, mauve and green to show the Parliamentary divisions and the Parliamentary boroughs. The names of surrounding counties have been twisted to fit the space available. The maps are detailed with coloured divisions, roads and railways, heights but no hills and are followed by 8 pages of statistics, boundaries etc.

A single transfer of the whole county was used in an ornithological work by D’Urban and Rev. Murray Mathew, vicar of Buckland Dinham in Somerset. An excellent and enthusiastic ornothologist Murray contributed many notes to the pages of the Zoologist. William Stewart Mitchell D’Urban FLS was an Exeter resident, living at 22 Lower Terrace in Mount Radford. He was curator of the Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter. The work has two other maps: one shows bird migration routes of the British Isles and is signed Mintern Bros. Lith.; and the second shows the migration routes of Europe. Both these maps have D’Urban’s signature in the title implying that he drew both maps. J G Keulemans drew the 4 chromolithographic plates of birds. The printers were Taylor & Francis of Red Lion Court in Fleet Street.
