180. Anonymous - Gazetteer 1901

At the beginning of the twentieth century a small, illustrated guide (28pp of text and photographs) of Devon was produced with a soft cover typical of today’s cheap guides. It had no publisher’s imprints but the large adverts on the back show it was probably produced for Thomas Cook. There is no printer’s address.

The last page opposite the map has another unframed and untitled sketch map of only the southern part of the county showing coach roads and railways. This is part of an advertisement for Thomas Cook coach tours of the area. A second sketch map on the inside back cover advertised the Prince's Devon Tour showing a circuit Exeter-Crediton-Okehampton-Plymouth-Exeter with excursions to Princetown, Ashburton and Dartmouth and by boat to Exmouth.

A note in the guide refers to a cricket club, (re)formed in 1900, noting that the ground would be ready in 1902.
